The United States is NOT a democracy! From average citizens to news anchors to the current and former Presidents, the mischaracterization of the USA as a democracy continues, and drives me insane every time I hear it.
There's a reason that none of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, or any of the 50 state constitutions contains a reference to the word "democracy". That's because we live in a Constitutional Republic, NOT a Democracy!
Democracy is succinctly defined as "mob rule". Consider that in a democracy where the majority defines the law, that if 50.1% decide to limit the free speech rights of the other 49.9%, then it's law. In the United States, there are safeguards against democracy -- individual rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
